Full Circle is the latest album to come from the Collective, with the band calling themselves simply “Benjafield.” This latest incarnation has been performing and recording madly for a year now, with notable performances being last year’s Falls Festival and more recently the last night of the Mountain Festival.
Comprising Kelly Ottoway (keys, vocals, programming), Simon Reid (guitars, vocals), Richard Armstrong (bass), Henry Nichols (drums), and Don Bate (vocals, trombone), Benjafield’s album is a collection of music written by Don over the last fifteen years. Tasty relaxing grooves and emotive ballads are the main fare, with less jazz and funk in the blend, and more dub and straight-ahead grooves.
Striving to capture great performances and great sounds has been the drive of the band in the studio. On top of this, mixing and mastering at Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne (Australia’s best, IMO) has ensured that the album is going to jump out of the speakers and wrap around you. As always, there are a few guests on the tracks, with some lyrics penned by Lincoln Lefevre and Esther Ottoway.
